The idea garnered approval, and soon the patrons were recommending that Emma create a chocolate strawberry cupcake.
“I’ll see if I can get fresh strawberries again,” Emma said from behind the counter. “With the grocery truck stuck in Silver Pines, it’s not guaranteed. But for now, I can mix up some strawberry frosting for the next batch of chocolate cupcakes.” There was a chorus of approval from the customers.
Detective Lindberg concluded his conversation with Lacey, promising to update her as soon as he had any information on Liam, as Emma, smiling at the feedback she was getting for her cupcakes, dusted her hands and opened the basement door to retrieve her strawberry flavoring from the basement.
They were right, she mused. The flavor of fresh strawberries would add the perfect touch to the day's creations. She hurried down the creaky stairs, leaving the animated discussion behind.
As she reached the second step, her hand reaching for the railing, she froze.
A dark figure lay sprawled at the bottom of the stairs. It was a body, and it lay motionless, its legs sprawled in an unnatural position. A pool of something dark spilled over the floor beside it.
Emma's breath caught in her throat, and then she screamed, the sound echoing off the basement stairwell walls.
